Business category picker

The primary category decides which searches you appear in. Instead of a category list that goes stale, this gives you a method for finding the right answer yourself.

How to use it

Describe your main line of work in one sentence — what you mostly do, and what customers mostly come for. It does not have to be complete; write the thing you most want to be found for. You get three selection rules, a set of words to try in the dashboard's category box, and a way to check your answer that costs nothing.

Google's official category list is deliberately not bundled here. Google sets the names, they differ between languages, and they change; a copy pasted into this page would be wrong within months. So we give you the method instead. The real names are whatever appears in your dashboard's suggestion box — if a word does not appear there, it is not a category.

The free way to check

Search Google for the term you most want to be found for, open the top three map results, and read the small line under each business name — that is their primary category. If two of the three use the same one, that is very likely yours.

The three selection rules: take the closest match, not the broader one; there is only one primary category, so it deserves thinking about on its own; add secondary categories only for work you actually do and actually want, and two to five is plenty.

Two things to know before you commit

First, changing the primary category has a cost: rankings wobble for a while afterwards because Google has to re-assess where you sit inside the new category. So think it through and change once, rather than "let's try this and switch again if it doesn't work".

Second, filling up the secondary categories is not a win. Add a category you do not serve and you attract people who ask one question and leave — some of whom leave a low rating for the wasted trip.

Both points, along with the rules for the name field, are in Business name and category: get these two wrong and the rest is wasted. Once the category is settled, ranking has more work in it: How to climb in Google Maps, step by step.

Once you are in the pool, what decides it

The category decides whether you are in the running at all. Once you are, the businesses on the same screen are compared on review count and rating.

In practice, ten happy customers, and often not one of them writes a review — not because they do not want to, but because it is a hassle, and typing it out is worse. Review Helper cuts that step to thirty seconds: the customer scans your code, ticks a few things they actually experienced, and the page turns it into a sentence in their own words. Copy, paste, posted. We do not ghost-write and we do not post for anyone — what they write, and whether to post it, stays their call. Three free reviews for every Google listing, nothing to pay up front, no card needed. No monthly fee: you pay per use.
