How the number is worked out

It uses the printing trade's rule of thumb: code width ≈ furthest scanning distance ÷ 10. To be scannable from a metre away, the code needs to be at least 10 cm square.

Two things are added on top: the quiet zone — the blank margin all around the code, roughly four modules wide; squeezing it away is the most common reason a code will not scan — and the pixel count at 300 dpi, so you can tell a printer or designer exactly what size file to produce.

Three common cases

  • Table tents and table cards — people are seated, phone 30 to 50 cm away, so 4 to 5 cm is enough.
  • A stand on the counter — scanned standing up, 50 to 80 cm away; 6 to 8 cm is safer.
  • Windows, posters, vehicle livery — two metres and beyond, so 20 cm upwards, and not in the middle of reflective glass.

When in doubt, go bigger. A code that is too big only costs space; a code that is too small does not scan, and that costs far more.

Before you print

  • Do not eat into the quiet zone. Pushing the code to the edge or laying it over artwork for the sake of the layout is the classic failure.
  • Do not invert it. A light code on a dark ground reads noticeably worse on many phones.
  • Do not stretch it. The code has to stay square; change the aspect ratio and it is dead.
  • Scan the printed copy yourself. Two or three different phones, standing where customers will actually stand.

With the size right, placement matters more — in the wrong spot, no size gets scanned. Which spots work is in Where to put your review QR code so people actually scan it. And once the code is up, somebody still has to ask: the Review request script generator gives you the words.

After the code is scanned

The size is right and it scans. What stops the customer is the step after that: thinking of something to say and typing it out.

In practice, ten happy customers, and often not one of them writes a review — not because they do not want to, but because it is a hassle, and typing it out is worse. Review Helper cuts that step to thirty seconds: the customer scans your code, ticks a few things they actually experienced, and the page turns it into a sentence in their own words. Copy, paste, posted. We do not ghost-write and we do not post for anyone — what they write, and whether to post it, stays their call. Three free reviews for every Google listing, nothing to pay up front, no card needed. No monthly fee: you pay per use.
